I got this idea from a random fic I read somewhere, but I think it’s a really funny to imagine that in Star trek when humans describe things their pets do, their alien buddies just think that this is another human doing these things because they don’t know earth animals. And like honestly humans have done weirder.

I have no idea whatsoever if Vulcans would be able to actually smell pheromones, I just like the idea that some human crew members decide to see if those pheromone perfume things really work and so they put some on and obviously can’t smell anything so it’s a disappointment, but they still decide to leave it on for the day. Flash cut to the Vulcan crew members on board freaking the fuck out thinking they’re going into an early and unexpected Pon Farr because they want to absolutely devour every human that passes by them.

I have my own personal headcanon that in the star trek universe Human musicals are EXTREMELY popular amongst the stars and across all galaxy's. Cause sure, other aliens have singing and dancing and music of all sorts but everyone quickly agrees that there is nothing like a human musical. It baffles a few Ferengi's ears when hoo-mans sing in such a high frequency for such a long time that shouldn't even be possible with their lung size! Vulcan's can appreciate the synchrony of their dancing and consider it a very pleasing experience (Their incredibly impressed by it and it becomes a frequent topic of conversation). Cardassian's admire the way the characters sing/talk to the audience and reveal what their feeling but not to the other characters, it's fun to watch secrets unfold or explode to someone's face as chaotic antics happen all around them (Their favorites tend to be Stephan Sondheim musicals). Surprisingly, even Klingons aren't immune to the talent of human musical theatre, on any given night you'll see a large group of Klingons sitting around a table ready for an opera show and tales from soprano's receiving numerous thanks and glory be's! from burly Klingons after a show.

Idea that once human movies and tv series becomes accessible to the rest of the universe they immediately have to get re-called and re-regulated by the federation.

Like, the Andorians thought they had sexy romance shows, but then the terrans come along and now you've got angry zhavey's, shreya's, charan's, and thavan's calling in concerned on what their teenagers are watching.

And this especially applies to horror movies, Klingon space gets access to some classics and figure they'll sit around and laugh at the silly human horror. Cut to one Texas Chainsaw Massacre marathon later and now some human captain's are reporting that the Klingons are looking at them weirdly, like they almost seem... nervous of them?

Same thing goes for when Vulcans begin to approach human crewmates to ask how they manage to keep their children away from "The animated blue kanine and the female pink sus scrofa domesticus?"

Ferenginar just has a flatout ban against any and all talent/contest shows. To win profit just for having a talent? For showing good teamwork? Without any cheating or lying? Disgraceful media. (Although they would appreciate the trick of adding a sob backstory to gain more sympathy votes)

Star trek is so funny cause sometimes you'll be watching an episode with srs topics that still affect our world today, and than the exact next episode is Spock getting his brain stolen.

My favorite part abt the star trek fandom especially the tos one is that as an outsider you'd see someone talk abt a plot from the show and you'd probably be like "damn what fan fic plot is this?" Only to actually watch the show and realise it was not fanon but canon..

People honestly portray Tuvok as far too "rolling his eyes, reluctantly going along with Janeway's silly little shenanigans" - he's literally so serious about being right there with her on every decision she makes. Janeway's like "I'm going to stay behind if the ship blows up" and Tuvok's like "I'm staying with you." Janeway's like "I'm going to deliver every member of the Equinox crew into the jaws of death via an alien revenge massacre" and Tuvok protests a grand total of one time before being fully on the bridge assisting her. He was the only one with her when she made the decision to honor the caretaker's wishes and save the Ocampa, dooming them all. He was willing to get court marshalled in order to fulfill a wish she couldn't grant by her own hand: Get them home [no matter what happens to me] <- wherein 'me' is Tuvok. This was the same wish that spurred him forward when he had to leave her on that planet and everyone left thought him cold for trying to fulfill it without her when in his mind it was akin to a dying wish, the last thing she'd ever express to him: Get them home [no matter what happens to me.] <- wherein 'me' is Janeway. He told Seven that the golden rule to follow is that the captain is "ALWAYS RIGHT" <- (His ACTUAL words) and when Seven asks if the captain should be followed even if someone KNOWS she's wrong he says "Perhaps." This man is perhaps the most ride or die dude in the universe about Janeway. Despite her labeling him her 'moral compass' he is by NO means impartial or unbiased. He'd defend her to his last breath. He canonically makes detailed psychological observations about her and has for years. He accounts for her luck when calculating the success of certain plans. It's implied in 'Twisted' that Janeway typically listens to Tuvok's suggestions and follows them nearly without fail - to the point that he's surprised and obviously irritated when Chakotay doesn't. Despite this they've been inside one another's quarters so infrequently that Tuvok can remember each instance. They call each other "Captain" and "Mr. Tuvok" even though they've known each other for twenty years. There's something wrong with them.

Was looking for star trek fics (im rewatching voyager) and since don't interact with the fandom a ton I was once again pleasantly surprised that it is not niche whatsoever on here or ao3. Consider this a very belated threshold day post, and do not be surprised if I pop out some kimparis fic because I just watched The Chute and by golly I need to see these men suffer together some more

I'm re-watch going voyager rn and this is so absolutely correct

voyager has everything. sexual tension between every member of the crew, a strange emotional support little man they picked up off the street, a captain pushed to the brink who constantly has to betray her own morals to try and save everyone in the end, a girl who like. becomes a weird non corporeal space entity and just like. evaporates into space and that's the last we see of her?? borg. an ensign who: has invented warp 10, saved the ship single handily multiple times, has zero rizz, is somehow always working, a senior member of the crew, died at least twice, and despite all that never gets a promotion. lizard sex, dubious ethics, if HIPAA wished to be a real boy, steven universe fusion, boy AND girl failures, and coffee in that nebula.

Get some swag and share the love (and contribute to a good cause!)

Friends! I am thrilled to announce that, by popular demand (true story), I've (re)launched my tee public page "Creative Procrastination" where you can now get some of my artwork printed on shirts and more, including this popular illustration 😁:

Get Some Swag And Share The Love (and Contribute To A Good Cause!)

I've decided to donate all earnings from sales (which is about 10% of the prices listed) to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (donate here). As a breast cancer survivor myself, I know all too well that I probably wouldn't have made it past age 32 were it not for advances in research and chemo drugs. 🙏🏻

This is a way for me to pay it forward! 🎗️🩷

Some of the designs are specifically for shirts, others (like many of my #CartoonVoyager illustrations) are available for prints, magnets, stickers, etc. Here's a sample of what's available now (check back often, I'm always adding more):

I love the complexity of feelings in Resolutions. In my opinion, they were happy to return to the ship, because even if they were stranded with their Love of their Lives, they still need & want other human interactions e.g. with friends and family. (I think being condemned to see only one person for the rest of your life is a torture, even if you love that person). I interpreted their sadness at the end of the episode as being sad that they didn't have enough time to experience and build up their romantic relationship. Do you think it is reasonable to be sad not being stranded with only 1 person for the rest of your life?

Good news: Prodigy season 2 was confirmed November 2021 and will also have 20 episodes! It will release later in 2023 and production is already underway.

So Star Trek Prodigy is an absolutely excellent show full of heart, wonderful storytelling, endearing characters, beauitful art and music, and a great balance of episodic and overarching storytelling that many of us have wanted Star Trek to find! Also there are some fun throwbacks that feel mostly purposeful and thought out and not too gratuitous! Lovely season 1, highy recommend to any Trek fan and hoping there will be a season 2!

There's the wrong way, the right way, and the Janeway.

I'm sad but Holo Janeway finally did what all Janeway's want: explode with her ship

Yes, even in Star Trek the most famous machines have been essentially human in appearance (Data in TNG, the Doctor in Voyager) which IMO has always bugged me.

I will note that there have also been the exocomps and recently some other non-humanoid ones, but there aren't any individuals that are nearly as popular as those mentioned before.

I was chatting with my mom today about how unique Knight Rider is as a show for one reason only- having a character that's honestly, genuinely, and truly a car.

(Yeah, sure, there's Transformers, but watch any Transformers show and you'll see that they rarely keep the robots in car mode for any scenes. The car modes are almost exclusively used for scene transitions or for action set pieces.)

Knight Rider is different in that it challenges the viewer to imagine a character who is a car. This character is Kitt. There is no way for him to stop being a car, even when it's inconvenient for him, or even when it's inconvenient for the plot. Kitt, as a concept, asks the viewer to empathize- what would being a car genuinely be like? What challenges would that present? What advantages?

This is where most robots in fiction, and fiction that claims to analyze humanity through the lens of robot characters, ultimately fail. I'm hard-pressed to find another work of sci-fi with a lead character in such a genuinely divorced role from humanity. Most fictional robots have:

Hands, to physically interact with a human-scaled world in the way that humans do,

Faces, for humans to relate to, and

Eyes, for humans to look at, and tell where the robot is looking.

Kitt has none of these. He never gets any of these at any point. The show even reflects on this in episode 22 of season 1, where he projects eyes onto his screen for the little girl who's trying to understand him. Yet even this is temporary- he gets rid of them after only a minute, and the girl gets used to the real him accordingly. It's never portrayed that these attributes (of hands, a face, and eyes) are some kind of upgrade that Kitt is missing.

However, Kitt is still undeniably 'human', and this is the most important part. Kitt's way of thinking isn't alien just because his body is different. It's what he is thinking about that's been altered from the traditional human experience. This leads to a fascinating exploration of topics such as:

Accessibility. Kitt is constantly analyzing where his body can go and to what places he has access to. Even Michael Knight learns to start thinking this way as he grows closer with Kitt, to the benefit of them both. The question of what Kitt can do vs what he can't do given his body is at the core of Michael's problem solving when the show is at its best.

Priorities. What does Kitt care about? Again, it's deeply important that the first answer to this is "his friends", but barring that, what else? Things like a good road or the polish of bodywork become elevated in importance through his perspective.

Prejudice. A lot of science fiction has the trope of "robot racism", or the idea that there's a portion of humans who actively believe that sentient robots are not equal to humans. Knight Rider, however, never takes this easy drama. Humans treat Kitt differently, and sometimes with a shocking amount of disrespect (even after he's revealed himself to be a person,) but it's never out of malice. It's out of ignorance. The bulk of these humans have only the best intentions. This presentation reflects upon real-world prejudices through a different lens than the aforementioned trope, which has, by now, been thoroughly beaten to death.

Again, it's the fact that the show actively goes out of its way to tell the audience that Kitt has a soul (season 2, the episode literally titled "Soul Survivor"), yet doesn't shy away from the genuine differences he faces from being nonhuman, that makes it so damn compelling to me.

(Mind you, the way the show usually "explores" these themes is through the lens of comedy that relies on Kitt's differences being the butt of the joke. . . and that the inclusion of these deeper themes definitely do NOT cancel out the show's genuine problems with sexism/racism! But-)

I really do consider Knight Rider to be science fiction at (or at least close to) its finest. Which is an insane statement out of context, I realize, but I hope after reading this post you might be able to understand why. Knight Rider set the bar for robots in fiction for me and nothing has been able to compare since.

TL;DR: Kitt is a car. This is deeply profound.

the food situation on voyager is so fucking dire compared to every other star trek series like their chef is cooking for a bunch of alien species he’s never encountered before and has no idea what their palates are like so he’s just throwing shit at a wall and hoping it sticks, they can barely use the replicators, and they can’t even go over to the captain’s quarters for a nice homecooked crew meal because unlike every other starfleet captain she’s so bad at cooking she can burn replicated water. that’s the real horror of the show tbh

I wanna know what Admiral Janeway's doctor saw that made them order her to give up coffee - and worse, what convinced her to follow that order. I mean, this is the woman that drove her starship through some mysterious Delta Quadrant nebula just to get her caffeine fix!! Whatever her condition is, it must be nothing short of total bodily annihilation.
