So I'm probably not going to be able to post that much, since I'm a volunteer for organizing the donations from Madrid to Valencia, and I'm in a group of young restaurateurs that are working on helping people restore personal items (photos, documents...) when the most important part of the cleaning is done. This is so people will stop throwing away their personal belongings that we can try to save, not everything will be saved but maybe it will help with the grief the Dana has caused.

So if anyone reading this is from Valencia please don't throw away your photos, put them on a bag with holes and hold onto them till we can go. We know this isn't a priority, but it is also important to let people know they have this option. For more information go to the Instagram page of the UPV. If anyone is interested in contacting this group this is the email: restauracionyrecuperaciondana@gmail.com

When sending experiments to space, what is the most unexpected thing you have to think about? Like you're probably have to consider things like radiation damage, but what is something that isn't an immediately obvious issue that you have to account for?

Are You Ready to #BeTheSpark?

Students - want to modify a NASA Spinoff technology and solve a real word problem?

image

Our Optimus Prime Spinoff Promotion and Research Challenge, known as OPSPARC for short, is a student challenge that guides teams through various NASA Spinoff technologies that are in their everyday world. The teams use their imagination, creativity, and engineering skills to develop their own ideas for NASA spinoff technology.

image

Spinoffs are technologies originally created for space and modified into everyday products used here on Earth.

image

Perhaps the most widely recognized NASA spinoff, memory foam was invented by NASA-funded researchers looking for ways to keep test pilots cushioned during flights. Today, memory foam makes for more comfortable beds, couches and chairs, not to mention better shoes, movie theater seats and even football helmets.

There are more than two-thousand NASA Spinoffs They include memory foam, invisible braces, firefighting equipment, programmable pace makers, artificial limbs, scratch-resistant lenses, aircraft anti-icing systems, endangered species tracking software, cochlear implants, satellite television, long-distance telecommunications, and many, many more.

image

The deadline has been extended to February 26th for our Mission 3 student challenge. Sign up NOW here: https://opsparc.gsfc.nasa.gov/

Fans of the Hasbro TRANSFORMERS brand will pick up on the play on words between the challenge name, OPSPARC, and the "AllSpark" from the TRANSFORMERS universe. The AllSpark is what gave the TRANSFORMERS robots life and knowledge, which they use to help mankind — just like NASA spinoffs. Students from around the globe will have the opportunity to Be The Spark!

Five Ways NASA’s Internships Rock(et)

Sending humans to space, returning to the Moon, transforming aircraft, exploring the extraordinary every day: just a few things you are a part of as a NASA intern. Whether you have dreamed of working at the agency your whole life, or discovered a new interest, students at NASA have the opportunity to make real contributions to space exploration and flight. Want to know more? Here are five ways these internships can be rocket fuel for your career:

5. NASA gives you a navigation system.

Five Ways NASA’s Internships Rock(et)

Imagine walking into a lab to work side-by-side with NASA scientists, engineers and researchers. As a NASA intern, that’s a daily reality. Mentors are full-time employees who guide and work with students throughout their internship. Space communications intern Nick Sia believes working with a mentor is what makes NASA’s internships different. “Working one-on-one has given me more opportunities to work on different projects,” he says. “It’s the best motivation to do great work.”

4. It’s more than training for launch day.

image

As a NASA intern, your work matters. Students are treated as employees, and their ideas are valued. Hands-on assignments allow interns to make real contributions to NASA research and gain experience. For example, Erin Rezich is working in our mobility lab to help design excavation hardware for planetary surfaces such as the Moon. “It’s an incredibly exciting project because these are problems that have to be solved to move planetary exploration forward,” she says.

3. Students develop an array of skills.

image

Not only do interns improve their technical skills, but they are also building communication and leadership skills. This summer, students are taking part in a two-week immersive design challenge. Participants will design a Ram Air Turbine for NASA Glenn’s 1x1 Supersonic Wind Tunnel. “This design challenge is a unique opportunity to create a design from scratch, which could actually be implemented,” says Woodrow Funk, an electrical testing engineer intern. Projects such as this allow students to work independently, plan, organize and improve time management skills.

2. Non-technical degrees shoot for the stars.

image

NASA also offers many opportunities for students pursuing a career outside of STEM fields. Departments such as human resources, administration, education and communications engage students with hands-on projects. These organizations provide support essential to NASA’s programs and missions. “I was excited that NASA offered opportunities that match my skill set,” says Molly Kearns, a digital media student working with Space Communications and Navigation. Kearns’ first summer at NASA confirmed her passion for graphic design. “What makes the experience so rewarding is seeing content that I created published on social media sites,” she says.

1. Students are surrounded by extraordinary peers.

image

Students come to NASA from all over the nation to develop important skills matched to their career goals and expand the way they think about their work. Being surrounded by the best scientists, developers, engineers, mathematicians and communicators is inspiring. NASA’s network is one of graduate fellow Jamesa Stokes’ main motivations. “There are tons of smart and awesome people who work here,” says Stokes, “At the end of the day, they are willing to help anyone who comes and asks for it.”

Voice Talent Online - Scholarship Application

Auto-translated captions on platforms like YouTube can be wildly inaccurate and lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications. However, most often the only alternative is no subtitles or captions at all. Despite their flaws, auto-translated captions are an essential tool for inclusivity and accessibility of content online.

On YouTube most videos have auto-generated English captions and even those can be very inaccurate and distracting. When considering the use of this technology across different languages it gets even more complicated and has a much higher margin for error. When uploading a video the YouTuber has the opportunity to add their own subtitles in multiple different languages without using the auto-generated feature, which is often utilized in certain content like major music videos or news reports.

Voice Talent Online - Scholarship Application

However, when it comes to translation it puts a lot of responsibility on the YouTuber to have accurate subtitles for many languages, when most people only speak a few, and this can cause equally as many mistakes and errors as when the auto-translate feature is used.

Personally I’m mixed raced Japanese-Canadian and I only speak English. A lot of the content I watch online is in Japanese or Korean, and having the option of auto-translated subtitles is extremely helpful. Oftentimes there are things I want to watch that don’t have any English translations available, which is very limiting. Sometimes within the online communities I’m a part of there are even other users trying to make their own translations, so more fans can understand. Despite systems like YouTube’s auto-translate feature sometimes being inaccurate and causing confusion, I’d much rather have a general idea of what’s happening (without expecting it to be 100% accurate) than not be able to enjoy the content or understand anything.

There have been multiple times when I was super excited about a new release but upon release I realized there were no English captions or other translations available, and I either had to wait weeks for updated captions or was never able to watch the content.

Voice Talent Online - Scholarship Application

Additionally, I also have some minor hearing issues and often use subtitles on YouTube and Netflix, even when watching things in English, because it helps me process. Taking these two aspects of my own personal experience with auto-generated captions, it’s clear to me that this is an essential service that promotes inclusivity and accessibility for those with hearing problems or language barriers, despite not always being accurate.

Outside of my own personal experiences, the data from many different studies conducted across platforms have shown that videos with subtitles have higher viewer retention rates. And according to KAPWING, 42% of people turn on subtitles to help with concentration.

Voice Talent Online - Scholarship Application

I would propose that instead of discussing the current value of this service with its many issues, we move towards optimizing the technology so auto-translated captions can be more accurate. Therefore eliminating the negative side effects and the main problem most people have with this service.

Hi, I From France. I Study In CPGE, Kind Of A Science Class Before Engineering School. I Love Watching

Hi, I from France. I study in CPGE, kind of a science class before engineering school. I love watching studyblr and bullet journal posts, and lately I wanted to make my own. I'm not really good at pretty notes, organised desk and perfect writing even if I love seeing those posts. I'm aware that there are already a lot of studyblr but I study quite a lot and I think studyblr community can be a good motivation for me. Also it's been more than a year that I'm using a bullet journal even if mine is quite simple but still helpful.
