Persephone's Abduction

"Persephone went willingly! Just check the oldest myth." - one too many a person on tiktok this morning.

Alright, I will. I'll use the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (7th century BCE) for you.

Persephone's Abduction

"[..] but broad-pathed Earth gaped wide

On the Nysion plain where the lord, the Receiver of many, rushed forth

With his deathless horses, Kronos' son who has many a name.

He seized her against her will, and aboard his golden car

Carried her off, lamenting; she uttered a piercing scream"

(line 16-20)

"When the maiden shrieked in appeal to her father"

(line 27)

"While the goddess [Persephone] viewed earth and starry sky, and the strong-flowing sea

Teeming with fish, and the rays of the Sun, she still hoped to behold

Her dear mother again, and the tribes of gods eternal in race;

So long did hope soothe her mighty mind despite her grief."

(line 33-36)

"Sun, [Helios], as a god for a goddess [Demeter] show your regard for me,

If ever by word or deed your heart and spirit I pleased.

The daughter whom I bore, my sweet offshoot of glorious form,

I heard through the murmuring air giving vent to an anguished cry

As though overpowered by force, yet caught no glimpse with my eyes.

[...]

Who took her without my consent against her will by force

And vanished -"

(line 64-72)

"And the lord in his [Hades'] halls he [Hermes] discovered seated upon a couch,

And he had his revered spouse by him, though much against her will,

Since she longed for Demeter, her mother -"

(line 43-45)

"She [Persephone] quickly leaped up in delight, but secretly, glancing round,

He [Hades] gave her to eat a pomegranate's honey-sweet seed, so that there

By revered Demeter the dark-robed she would not for ever stay."

(line 73-75)

"I [Persephone] at once leaped up in delight, but Hades secretly put

A food as sweet as honey, a pomegranate's seed, in my hand

And using violence forced me to taste it against my will"

(line 412-412)

Achilles

I

To them I am the brute not the lover

The raging king’s hound, his gold spear – death’s kiss

Was this the way, was there no other?

II

History, prayèrs did try to cover –

Those violent delights, and that violent bliss

- To them I am the brute not the lover.

III

Yet, if time would but only uncover

Those extra curves of your smiles that they miss – I miss.

Was this the way – was there no other?

IV

If the Prince of Troy did not hover over

My mind and your ghost – in debt to the Styx –

To them I am the brute not the lover!

V

They forget romeo, the pre-mover;

Was it for this you died, was it for this?

Alas, I am the brute. Not your lover.

Was this the way? Was there no other?

"Achilles" by Sadbh Kellett. First published in The Attic XX, 2017.

That little brat, like mother like son🤣🤣🤣

Inspired by a recent chat with @tanyakitty151

Little Ares: Wanna play?

Athena (reading a book): No.

Little Ares (peeking over her shoulder): What are you doing?

Athena (moving the book): Reading.

Little Ares: Wanna fight?

Athena: NO. I'm reading.

Little Ares (with a frowny face): You’re boring.

Athena (also frowning): I'm not boring. You're just a child.

Little Ares: Well, you're just old!

Athena (gasps, then pounces him)

Little Ares (deviously, to himself): Works every time.

Yes! Medusa would be such a cool goddess, she has such a bad rep that she doesn't deserve, I hope she and all her followers have a good day

Medusa as a goddess headcanons

She is the Goddess of victims (thank you, @rey-diem )

Out of all the gods, she is very rebellious and defiant against Zeus and those who follow him.

She didn't immediately become a goddess, but after a long time of self-healing and such, godhood was bestowed upon her

She has a strong hatred for Poseidon and Athena. She also feels sorry for their mortal victims who have caught their attention (same for the mortal victims who have suffered the hands of the other gods)

Medusa would be a maiden Goddess, and her sisters would be at her side.

Obvious tension between Medusa and Athena

She is a hands-on interactive Goddess. She always interacts with her worshippers and her children

She's very protective of her people and children

Hates Poseidon and Athena with a passion and tries to keep her children far, FAR away from theirs

People who have a tattoo of Medusa, she protects and they are her followers

That's all. Hope you enjoy.

Chapters: 1/? Fandom: Ancient Greek Religion & Lore Rating: Not Rated Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Hermes/Penelopeia( ancient Greek religion & Lore),Hermes/Penelope (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Hermes & Penelope (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Apollo & Hermes (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore) Characters: Hermes (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Penelope (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Penelopeia (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Apollo (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore) Additional Tags: First Love, Young Love, Not that Penelope, First Relationship, Young Hermes, Protective Older Brothers Summary:

The first time Hermes thought he liked someone, was with Persephone. It wasn’t anything serious, anything he understood back then, but he would see her whenever he would go with Apollo to see Iasion and Demeter, and he wouldn’t deny even when he was a kid he thought she was pretty, and felt happy to spend time with her, when she would try to let him help with whatever she was doing(before he got bored and did something else most of the time), when she would make a flower crown for him, or that it felt like his heart was going faster then usual when she called him a cute kid, but it wasn’t like she saw him as anything other then family, especially with him being still a kid(not that he wanted to listen to Apollo about that part), even if he wasn’t against kissing her when he got older(and had tried to, before her mom stopped him, and they both told him he was too young for that). Still well he liked Persephone enough, and he thought Iris was cute too when he started working with her, it felt…different when he saw Penelopeia,

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Ancient Greek Religion & Lore Rating: Not Rated Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Iasion & Electra of the Pleiades(Ancient Greek Religion & Lore) Characters: Iasion | Eetion (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Electra of the Pleiades (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Harmonia (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore) Additional Tags: Parent-Child Relationship, Mother-Son Relationship, Family Reunions, Reunions, Iasion was made immortal, Iasion is Persephone stepfather, Iasion is not Zeus’s son, Mentions of Demeter, mentions of Persephone - Freeform Summary:

Iasion had not been to Samothrace before, at least not that he could remember. He had a memory from a long time ago, of his parents saying he had been born there when his mom was visiting someone, but he had not seen it since he returned to Crete with his mom not long after. It..made him wonder why he never came back to the place after he met Demeter, remembering that story, even if he had a good idea why that was when he thought about it now, especially after so long since that last time he was there, he thought as he looked around him at the place he first entered the world, back when his parents were still around, even if Dardanus wasn’t yet, back before he had to watch his dad die, get separated from his mom and brother, figuring he would never see them again, all because of the Crooked one. Those thoughts made it pretty clear why he stayed away from this places until now, why a part of him just wanted to leave and go back to the family he had now, but he had to know if what he heard was true, and he had to see if it was true, on his own.

Chapters: 3/3 Fandom: Ancient Greek Religion & Lore Rating: Not Rated Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Apollo & Artemis (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Artemis & Zeus (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Apollo & Zeus (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore) Characters: Artemis (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Apollo (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Leto (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore), Zeus (Ancient Greek Religion & Lore) Summary:

Artemis had only a few memories of her father, but it still surprised her how much he looked like Apollo, the same curly bright hair that shined like the sun, the same eyes that reminded her of the sky on a clear day, even a lot of his face looked like him. It annoyed her, especially with how she used to hope before that he would look like her, have her dark earth colored hair at least, unlike Apollo and their Mama, or her slightly darker green eyes then her Mama had, but that wasn’t what happened she was reminded, when they entered the room he was sitting in, waiting for them.

I absolutely love your interpretations, especially Cassandra: she would definitely be a victim of the Web.

I also have a couple more entities opinions even if they aren't really tied to greek heroes:

Calypso would be either an avatar of the Web or, the option I like more, an avatar of the Corruption because it's often tied to toxic types of love and I could confidently say that she is the definition of it: she kept him against his will, wanting him close to her, wanting to be with him.

I could confidently say that Circe would be an avatar of the Flesh for her transmutation abilities.

Tiresias would be either an avatar of the End (because he is, y'know, a ghost) or an avatar of the Eye for his prophetic abilities.

I feel that Orpheus would be either marked or aligned with the End for his little adventures in the underworld, or the web for his abilities to enchant, or control (that might be a little of a reach), others with his music.

Medea would probably be an avatar of the Slaughter because of the extremely violent acts that she committed during her play; I'm not sure though, I'm only at season three of tma so I'm not really an expert on entities and avatars.

Just gonna throw this into the void:

Odyssey Odysseus would either be aligned with the stranger or the eye, even though I'm leaning more into the stranger due to the continuous shedding of his Identity and constant deception; Ulysses from The Divine Comedy would definitely be aligned with the eye for his even bigger want for knowledge (he literally got killed by God because he went were no human could, for him humans were made to constantly try to get more knowledge ("considerate la vostra semenza: fatti non foste a viver come bruti, ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza", translation: "Consider ye the seed from which ye sprang; Ye were not made to love like unto brutes, But for pursuit of virtue and of knowledge.")

considering i just reblogged a post saying i talk about mythology, figure now might be a good time to talk some more about my campaign.

character of the day: parthenia.

she’s a devout worshiper of zeus, specifically of the epithet of zeus xenios. she runs a sort of boarding and bathhouse for travellers passing through called the golden oak. if you know zeus’ symbols, you’ll understand.

so far i have her described as the human embodiment of a warm blanket and a cup of hot chocolate. i considered giving her a child with zeus, but she has far too much respect for hera to accept his advances.

normally i know this would not stop zeus. in this case, i don’t want it as part of my campaign.

so she’s favored by hera and is generally just a lovely person.

thinking about how in the odyssey, love comes in the form of recognition. to be loved is to be known and to be known is to be loved.
