MHA has the distinct issue with the fact it's one guy writing it with a few editors chipping in, I think a lot of Manga and Anime could avoid some of their issues with just not expanding and using concepts.
Like there is so much in MHA that could have more done with it, there are more characters then there is time, there are 20 Students in the class, but I don't think we even know the reason they wanted to become heroes, what are the motivations for half of them?
Heroism has become this sort of sport in a way, competitive and there are so many of them, they have a ranking system, from memory, No Other Series Has a Ranking System For Heroes, because they don't need them, all other series have your Listers, A, B, C, D, there is no numerical title, and what the fuck does it mean to be No.1.
See that's what I want to see, why the fuck does being No.1 matter? And who better to ask that question in verse by Shoto, a victim of this sport, him and his brothers breed like Pokémon for their fathers selfish ambition to a title that in the long terms is really meaningless, a target really, what is being No.1 if anything but a status symbol, a don't fuck with me sign, the get out of jail free card. Like seriously did anyone ever explain what the fuck being number one even meant?
Why the fuck do Katsuki and Izuku even want that title, they just want it to be the best?
What I would have loved to see but I am so disappointed that we didn't get was MHA's version of Young Justice's Disordered, a final reflection and dissection's of the characters, the Todoroki's are their worlds version of the Wayne family.
Show me why Shoto is the better version of Endeavour, not just in power but who he is as a person, someone better, he wouldn't want anyone to endeavor what he and his family went through, he is MHA's Dick Grayson so desperate to become nothing like his father, taking the best parts of him making himself better, stable not one to create his own legacy through a child. He doesn't want another him, another Natsou, Fuyumi or Touya, he doesn't want another Endeavour as that name isn't a symbol of Enji's desire to become No.1 to Endeavor through everything that life throws, but no.
Endeavor isn't his title, it is badge of shame, it's not his. Endeavor is the title of the family, to hold out against him, Rei was endeavoring so much pain from seeing her family burn around her, eldest burning.
Fuyumi was holding out for the hope of a normal life, one she could enjoy and share with her family.
Natsou was holding out for the day he could leave to become his own person as far away from his family as he could.
Shoto Endeavored to even become himself he lost his childhood, but you can't lose something you never had.
And Touya, that poor boy so wide eyed and simply wanting his fathers love, his father to save him, but he burned his father frozen watching him, only to be saved by a demon who walked out of the flame.
This is MHA's Batfamily, and Touya has so much in common with Jason it hurts, they both just wanted their Father to save them, but they burned, Bruce tried to save Jason but he couldn't Enji froze, the two were brought back by demons, and had no qualms about murder, to kill to get that attention after they lost a portion of their lives.
But they never explore that, Horikoshi has had several chances to ask, how does it feel to die and be revived, to lose that time, but he never has.
If he had a few other writers to conifer with, you'd get something truly interesting, MHA needed more time in the oven, it has the hallmarks of a truly interesting story, but really didn't get the time to develop, so much was left unanswered, unwritten and unresolved, the status at the end of the series is the same, yeah it gets slightly better, but does it.
We still have people wanting to become heroes, we still have the rankings we still have people gunning for first, and what's that going to do?
Create another Todoroki family, and with Quirk Singularity that oversight of Hubris is going to start festering again, it may not be from the demon in the shadows, but rather the man in the mirror repeating the same mistakes that one man driven by the selfish desire for first made.
And this time they won't be facing Touya with an equal, but they might be facing Magneto with no answer.
Endeavor is Batman without the compassion, a brutal drive for the mission in which everything can be fodder, he will alienate his family but have his compatriots follow him without question.
Hell Touya got fucking Jason Todd-ed.
and you know for a fact that Shouto had his own moment like Dick Grayson in Young Justice, I do not believe that guy took the rankings still being a thing lightly.
What could have been the MHA's own Sorta BatFam got burned so hard from one man's sheer drive to achieve his own selfish goal, that it actually became a version of it, resentful children, a traumatised wife, and overstepped boundaries like he was going up the stairs five at a time, all of which culminates in them have lasting scars.
I am in no way saying what Touya did as Dabi was even remotely correct, but when you look at Enji as a person, he's horrific and it's genuinely understandable why his sons all fucking hate him.
Also jesus Touya has far to much in common with Jason.
Something I never particularly liked about Endeavor's atonement, is that he never gave or gave up anything he actually wanted.
Like Endeavor was always willing to risk his life and limb as a hero, so any life-threatening risks or bodily harm he receives is just part of the job he was always willing to do from the beginning.
Him building a house for his remaining family members, only he won't be there?
Endeavor never cared whether he lived with his family or not, all that mattered to him was creating the strongest hero in Shoto.
So he never showed any want to be with his family until Shoto was already on his way to being a great hero.
It was barely an afterthought to him that was never followed through on.
The ending only makes all this worse, because it looks like he replaced each member of his family that he lost with heroes, the people he really wanted to be around...
Fuyumi = Burnin, onima = Natsuo, Hawks = Touya
Shoto on the path to heroic success.
And Rei there too, I guess for some reason???
Just wheeling him around...
Do you feel similarly or different about all this?
DING DING DING We have a winner!
Endeavor never has to sacrifice anything, he never chooses his family over his precious number one spot. He only even remembered they existed after he got his Precious.
And something I noticed is he is full of shit, and believes his own shit.
Like he thinks that 'oh I'll make a house for all my family members to live in' (Which we never see happen, so once again empty bullshit as always). But he never asks them what they want, it is incredibly bold to assume they would all want to live together, or even be able to with their careers, and if the kids want to start their own families. We also know Shoto likes traditional Japanese flooring, but what about the rest of them, and does Endeavor even know that?
One thing I've never seen anyone call out is his manipulative gaslighting speech to Natsuo after being rescued from Ending. He says that he didn't save Natsuo because he didn't want to make like Natsuo feel like he has to forgive him, only to without hesitation force him into a hug. So fucking much for respecting Natsuo's autonomy.
And this ain't the first time this lazy coward has froze when his kids are in immediate danger, we see him standing safely outside the flames with his fire resistance while Touya who's weak to fire burned on the peak. With Endeavor of course claiming 'he did everything he could'.
We also find out he harrassed Fuyumi into giving him Shoto's, his fucking masterpiece, number. Which he uses to text Shoto, in the middle of not just his workday, but fucking class hours! So much is wrong with this, this doesn't make him look good or show any atonement or redemption. What it does is make me think a lot less of both this excuse of a human being and his daughter (The start of her enabler arc). He's doubling down on past behaviour, quite stupidly I might add. And why the fuck did he need to get it from Fuyumi? Presumably, he's the one paying for the phone, he should just have the number from that!
Once again this man openly admits he only offered the work-study to Deku and Bakugou to manipulate Shoto. And constantly favors him when it comes to teaching. Understanding Deku's word vomit isn't difficult, even with him stupidly over-explaining it
What we don't see (or hear of) is him doing anything for or with Fuyumi, the only kid that wants anything to do with him (despite her character profile saying she resents him)
He is constantly given credit for shit he actively isn't doing!
But he and the narrative constantly throw him a pity party the second consequences are even hinted at. Not to mention he is also constantly rewarded for his (non-existent) efforts, Shoto chooses to work with him, Rei forgives him, Hawks, Burnin, Best Jeanist, etc are around to lick his boots clean and make sure he doesn't have to face any of those hinted at consequences. Boo fucking Hoo, the League (and specifically Dabi in this) deserved to win, and by the end, I was convinced that they would have been better for society
as i am on a posting spree tonight, i thought id talk about the problems with the my hero fandom. no, not the bigger, more “popular” ones like the heavy sexualisation of literal teenagers, or the toxic shippers that push their opinion onto everyone. nope, tonight im talking about the todoroki/jeanist/hawks issue.
note: id like to announce that in NO WAY do i hate, or am trying to “come at” any stans of the characters ive mentioned. this is just what ive noticed recently, it is not meant to attack anyone.
the 5 things that are bothering me, and questions i see thrown around
1.) the endeavor apologist debate: is he fine now because he’s sad? was it just his fault or is the whole family to blame?
2.) the todoroki family arguement: if i like/stan the characters, am i an abuse apologist?
3.) best jeanist and what he’s said: am i still allowed to like him, even if hes affiliated with “bad” characters?
4.) the hawks issue: is he a bad person? can i like him even after all the bad things he did?
5.) dabi and his trauma: is it an excuse for his behavior? does it condemn him more?
i can't answer any of these questions, but there is one thing that nobody seems to be able to grasp recently. my hero academia is not a show in black and white. there ARE morally grey situations and there ARE morally grey characters.
it’s up to you what the answers are. its up to you, who is bad and good.
to quote one of my favorite musicals of all time: “you decide what’s right, you decide what’s good.”
i think we ought to be seeing the show not in heroes and villains, black and white, but entirely in grey until you can decide for yourself.
ALSO!! dont let the fandom dictate everything you decide! i mean sure, it's nice to get input from others but if you feel like, for example, dabi is right and hawks was wrong, but user226378 thinks differently, thats ok!! that's what fandom is for, and you can always take a break too. sometimes i get caught up in the wave of drama too, and it can be difficult to stick to your opinions.
anyways, thanks for reading this (even if you skimmed it like i definitely would have). i love this show to death but it’s hard to when controversy sweeps you up. have a lovely day guys,, <3. go drink some water, dont stay up too late, ily!!!!!
